If non-surgical methods fail to lower intraocular pressure (IOP) to a safe level, your physician may decide that surgery should be performed. The two major types of surgical interventions are:

  • Trabeculectomy (most common glaucoma surgical intervention)

    • A complete drain is created to reduce eye pressure by making a new drain
  • Nonpenetrating Filteration Surgery (newer surgical intervention)
    • Also referred to as a Deep Sclerotomy which creates a thin area on the outer layer of the eye to reduce eye pressure
