Medications can be effective in lowering intraocular pressure for patients with glaucoma, however, they can be very expensive, messy, and have unwanted side effects. There are varieties of medications that can be used independently or in combination with other glaucoma medications or laser treatments to control pressure in the eye. It is also imperative that your medications be taken exactly as your doctor prescribes. Failure to do so may result in your eye pressure being above normal and may cause further damage to the eye with the possibility of eventually leading to blindness. It is also important to take the time to speak to your physician regarding your ability to be compliant with your medications. Individuals who fall into the following categories may be at a higher risk of being non-compliant for their medication(s):

  • Seniors
  • Find it difficult taking existing medications as prescribed
  • Travel or have a hectic work schedule
  • Poor hand eye coordination
  • Limited motor control
  • Currently on 3 or more medications
  • Language barriers
  • Do not like putting in contact lenses
  • Fear of taking medications
